Therapy for Trauma and PTSD
Understanding Trauma & PTSD
Trauma can develop after experiencing or witnessing events that feel overwhelming, threatening, or deeply distressing. These experiences may be sudden or ongoing and can affect how the nervous system responds to the world long after the event has passed.
Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and trauma-related difficulties may arise following experiences such as accidents, medical trauma, abuse, neglect, violence, loss, childhood adversity, or prolonged relational harm. Trauma can impact emotional regulation, relationships, self-esteem, memory, and a sense of safety in daily life.
At MindRidge, we recognize that trauma affects each person differently. Therapy is not about reliving the past it is about helping you feel safer in the present and supported as you move forward.
How Trauma May Show Up
Trauma and PTSD can present in many ways, including:
- Intrusive memories, flashbacks, or nightmares
- Emotional numbness or feeling disconnected from others
- Always watchful, anxious or tense, even in safe situations
- Easily startled by sounds or movements
- Constantly scanning their surroundings for danger
- Unable to fully relax or rest
- Overly sensitive to people’s tone, expressions, or behaviour
- Shame, guilt, or persistent self-criticism
- Avoidance of reminders or situations linked to the trauma
- Dissociation or feeling detached from yourself or your surroundings
You do not need to meet a specific diagnosis to benefit from trauma-informed therapy. If past experiences continue to affect your present life, support is available.
